Is spending lakhs on a child’s birthday party reasonable or insane?
The 69-year-old describes having his son, Tiger, sleep on his chest as a “wonderful feeling. “Saans ek ho jata hai (Our breaths become one),” says Jackie. Reminiscing the days when Tiger was a little kid the veteran actor recalls “Chhota tha tab chhota pakadta tha, abhi itna bada hai, bada pakadta (I would hold him when he was little, now that he has grown so big, I hold him as he is now).”
For Jackie Shroff, a hug is not a small gesture, it’s something that expresses affection and deepens the bond.
Jackie Shroff believes that affection should always have a place in parenting. Sharing his thoughts on hugs and emotional connection, he said, “Mauka milta hai main hug kar leta hoon… hug them! Hug toh kisi ko bhi chahiye na (Whenever I get the chance, I hug them… hug them! Everyone needs a hug, don’t they)?”
“Whatever happens at the home, it impacts children”
Jackie Shroff also emphasises how the atmosphere at home also plays a major role in shaping children. According to him, whatever happens within the family impacts children deeply. “Ghar shaant, Ghar harmony. Bachhe shaant, bachhe harmony (When the home is peaceful and has harmony, children also feel peaceful and stay in harmony),” he says. He vows that creating peace within the family is an important part of raising children who are happy from within.
Jackie Shroff believes bond should be built on mutual understanding
But the ultimate parenting philosophy Jaggu Dada goes by is about creating a bond that has mutual understanding. Speaking about his children, he says, “Now they are a big girl and a big boy. I listen to them, they listen to me.” For him, parenting isn’t just about guiding but it’s also about giving children space to express themselves. “It’s not like they only have to hear the mother or the father.” He believes that as children grow, the relationship should evolve into a two-way conversation where both parents and children learn from each other.
Jaggu Dada’s ultimate parenting philosophy is about creating a bond that has mutual understanding.
“Give them ears”: Jackie Shroff’s simple advice for parents
Jackie Shroff’s biggest parenting lesson is simple- listen to children. “Parenting matlab, listen to them. Give them ears, otherwise they will drift talking to others, taking advice from people.” He believes that parents need to give their children the time and attention to express themselves.
“Kids are the future”: Jackie Shroff on children, awareness, and sustainability
He then shared an example of meeting children who spoke to him about plants and nature. For Jackie, this awareness meant something deeper. “Kids are the future, they see faster than us now. I met some children talking about plants and all that thing to me. Because they are aware that what we are leaving behind is for them,” he shared.
A reminder for parents
Jackie Shroff’s thoughts on parenting highlight that raising children is not just about providing for them, but about building a relationship where they feel loved, safe, and heard. Jackie Shroff’s belief in listening to children and respecting their perspectives is a reminder for parents that parenting is a two-way journey. Small gestures like hugs, creating a peaceful home environment, his approach reminds parents that emotional connection plays a powerful role in a child’s growth.
