What travellers need to know before venturing into wilderness



We all know Karnataka for its pretty hill stations, misty forests, coffee estates and wildlife reserves and the Western Ghats. Places like Coorg, Chikkamagaluru, Bandipur and Kabini have been attracting thousands of nature enthusiasts from all over every year.

There are four species found in Karnataka known as India’s “Big Four”: the Indian cobra, common krait, Russell’s viper, and saw-scaled viper. These snakes are venomous and have historically been associated with the majority of serious snakebite cases across India. It is therefore important for travellers to know about these before venturing into wilderness.

While spotting one of these is uncommon, and snake attacks on tourists are rare, it is essential to know about them.
